3 Game-Changer Skincare Tips

To say we don't love skincare would be a lie. Self care goes beyond skincare, wouldn't you agree?

Here are three game-changer skincare tips to incorporate and keep in mind as you try new products and welcome new products as staples and holy grails to your skin care routine.

1) If you are allergic to a food, consult your doctor before using it's oil.

It'll save you from unnecessary irritation, a messed up skin barrier or worse, a trip to the ER!

Ex: Nut allergy --> using products with nut-based oils or cooking with nut-based oil

Sometimes, the human body can be strange. You may be allergic to a food in its raw form but when cooked, you're ok eating it. I speak from experience in this. When I was a teen, I couldn't eat raw carrots with out my tongue going into itchy frenzy and me having to clear my throat for the next 6 hours even after taking a Benadryl. However, when I spoke with my pediatrician at the the time, he suggested trying carrots cooked as steaming/boiling them partially breaks down the cell wall structure making it easier to digest and freeing up more nutrients.

2) Always test a product before full use.

When introducing a new product into your skincare regiment hat you haven't used before, it is best to test it on a small area before proceeding to use it all over your face and God-forbid, having a reaction. How do you test? Rub a dime-sized amount of the product into the inside of your forearm. If you don’t experience any irritation or inflammation within 24 hours, the products should be safe for you to use.

3) When introducing actives, start low and go slow.

When introducing actives into your skincare regimen such as a vitamin C, retinol, or an AHA, start at the lowest percentage available especially if you have never used the product. Make sure you test it in the area on your forearm. If there is no irritation or inflammation and you proceed to incorporate it into skin care routine, go slow, using the new product 2-3 times a week for approximately two weeks before increasing the frequency over time. Be sure you know which products you can and cannot layer and the time of day that is best to use it so you get the most out of the products that you have invested in!
